My mother absolutely loved this book which she read many years ago but I have just got around to starting it.
I really enjoyed this part of the book. As they grew up, Aisling and Elizabeth started to become exasperating and I started to feel I had had enough of them!
Many people have loved this book and maybe you will too, but I decided that life is too short and went on to read something else cqndle. One person found this helpful. I first read this when it was published in and I have just reread it for a reading challenge. Rereading is not my thing but Cand,e loved this book from start to about twenty pages from the end. I felt the ending was a bit rushed and I am off to see whether this is one of Maeve Binchy’s books that had a follow-on.
I do hope so! Ms Binchy’s writing is always atmospheric, and emotive, and tear jerking on occasion too. I shall be breaking my no rereading rule to revisit some more of my old favourites. I loved this book till I got near the end and realised it was not going to have a happy ending. I can’t believe how many people either died or were killed.
Light a Penny Candle by Maeve Binchy
It was a great description of life in Ireland during the war years, with humour and emotion however it descended into a mockery of faith, marriage and even men in general with exceptions and a strong attack on drinking.
A lovely friendship which spans the sea and the decades. Well developed characters and the atmosphere across the two countries in the ‘s is excellent my developed A story of two strong women supporting each other through, what proves to be trialling lives.
This is a book I overlooked as I have read all of Maeve Binchy’s novels. She was an excellent writer. With this book I did find it slow to get into but once hooked I really got into the main characters of Elizabeth and Aishling and the life dramas they faced and couldn’t put the book down.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with other reviewers in that the end left me hanging. Henry would not have reacted in that way – it seemed most odd sand almost as if there was another chapter missing – in fact I checked my kindle couple of times to see if I had missed it somehow.
Is there a sequel? ,ight
Excellent recommendation by Mr Tom Hanks. I love the honest portrayal of Irish life against the London struggle after the war and how a maevve friendship blossoms. Book started interesting from the bjnchy. Loved the way it switched from character to another. This is my first Maeve Binchy read but definitely will not be the last.
If you have an Irish family you can totally understand some of the sayings and mannerisms that maevw the book what it is as well. It’s a lovely tale of true friendship in every way and of 2 women that are penny for each other no matter what. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the fact that it was long and could not put it down.
The only thing that spoilt it was the ending – as everybody on this review section has said, it ended too abruptly which was a let down for such a beautiful book. I will be reading all of Maeve’s books now as her writing is wonderful.
